How to Single Crochet, Double Crochet and Treble Crochet: Basic Stitch Tutorial

So you’ve decided that you want to learn how to crochet? Let me be the first to welcome you! I promise you that learning how to crochet is easier than it looks!

The only major downside to crocheting (in my opinion) is having to constantly count the number of stitches you are making.

For this reason, it is imperative that you can clearly tell where one stitch starts and the next stitch begins.

Sure, you’ll miss a stitch here and there, even the experienced on do! But, in the end, you’ll project will be worth it.

Best Yarn For Beginners

While you are learning to crochet, I highly suggest you stay away from certain types of yarn. For instance, plush yarn is sooo adorable and you can make so many cute things, but it is very hard to count stitches with plush yarn.

I’d recommend you wait to use plush yarn for when you have a clear understanding of the basic stitches.

Amazon has a ton of cheap beginner yarn. I recommend this bundle while you are learning, especially if you are interested in learning Amigurumi.

If you want to pick up yarn at your local craft store, then look for yarn labeled “tube yarn”. This yarn takes out the possibility of fibers getting stuck while you are learning.

How To Single Crochet

You’ll start off most projects with either a chain (CH) or a magic circle (MC). For learning purposes we’ll use the CH method.

To start, CH 11.

Step 1: First you’ll insert your hook in the second chain from the hook.

Step 2: Once your hook is through the chain, you’ll yarn over.

Step 3: Next, you’ll pull the yarn through the same same chain. This is called pulling up a loop. You will have 2 loops on your hook now.

Step 4: Finally, you’ll yarn over again and pull through both loops.

Continue out the row using the same instructions from above. You’ll notice the stitches formed at the top once you are done.

At the end of each row, you’ll want to be sure to chain 1, to signify the height of a single crochet in a project. This will make sure that you project stays as straight as possible.

How To Double Crochet

To start, CH 12.

Step 1: First, you’ll yarn over. Then you’ll insert your hook in the 3rd chain from the hook.

Step 2: Next, you’ll pull the yarn through the same same chain. This is called pulling up a loop. You’ll have 3 loops on your hook.

Step 3: Finally you’ll yarn over again pull through all three loops.

Here is how the final row of double crochets (DCs) will look plus a ch 2.

How To Treble Crochet

To start chain 13

Step 1: First, you’ll yarn over twice. Then you’ll insert your hook in the 4thd chain from the hook.

Step 2: Next, you’ll pull the yarn through the same same chain. This is called pulling up a loop . You’ll have 4 loops on your hook.

Step 3: Finally you’ll yarn over again pull through all four loops.

Here is the final treble crochet plus a ch 2.
